For this particular issue, there was never any doubt that we would use this arresting Picasso image from the then current MFA exhibit. But because this image was being used elsewhere by the MFA to promote the show, I was intent on transforming image into something unique and engaging in its own right. Art New England had already been publishing for nearly 20 years when Jeff was asked to take over as Art Director, so its fundamental look was fairly well established. His challenge then, was "to work within the existing parameters, which were classic and simple, to create something contemporary and exciting that wouldn't alienate their readers."

"I kept their basic grid and font styles, but gave myself license to break out with geometric white space and highly dynamic contrasts and cropping."
