When I’m down about the state of things I make some relevant art to share. And that 250-year old document we’re celebrating this year is as relevant as ever. I designed and printed up this adapted Declaration of Independence quote as posters & over-sized stickers, then dropped ‘em off around town, signed, stamped, and free for the taking.
Last Saturday morning after I’d dropped my oldest son off for his day-long robotics team tournament, I took my second oldest to breakfast at a nearby diner. As we settled into our pleather booth for our peaceful meal we saw the bombs on the news on the tv in the corner of the dining room. The horror of the plumes of smoke rising from a city street that looked like anywhere. The billowing foreshadows of chaos and uncertainty that was sure to follow. I told him to order whatever he wanted.
Poster design for a poetry reading at @grolierpoetry in @harvard_square featuring Boston-area “word wrangler” poet Jim Dunn @jdunn001 and SF-based-MA-born surrealist poet (and @citylightsbookspoetry editor) Garrett Caples, introduced by local rock legend Willie “Loco” Alexander @willielocoalexander (Boom Boom Band, VU, etc.) and hosted by James Fraser @jfraser2012. We went with a Filmore-meets-Milton-Glaser look to the get the appropriate West Coast-East Coast vintage rock & roll vibe.
Poster for City Lights Books’ newly published collection of essays by French surrealist poet & philosopher André Breton and the in-store event showcasing a conversation between translator Austin Carder and editor Garrett Caples. To play off the title, “Cavalier Perspective,” and to evoke the look of mid-century surrealist journals like “Medium” I enlisted my son Lowell to create the hand-drawn eyeball collage we layered and merged with an abstraction of the book cover photo by Eddy Navarro. What a treat to pay tribute to such an important 20th century thinker, and what a treat to collaborate with my son.
Poster for @citylightsbooks promoting the upcoming live reading of American Book Award-winning “Things You May Find Hidden In My Ear: Poems from Gaza” by @mosab_abutoha, the acclaimed Palestinian poet and founder of the Edward Said Library who was detained by the IDF while trying to evacuate Gaza with his wife and three children. 25 all-star poets are scheduled to read in person. Abu Toha will join via Zoom from Cairo, circumstances permitting. The event will benefit the Middle East Children’s Alliance (@mecaforpeace), which is providing aid to families displaced by the conflict. The design was inspired in part by this verse from the book:
Don’t ever be surprised
to see a rose shoulder up
among the ruins of the house:
This is how we survived.
